. let me start with this. there's a real battle going on tonight. john mccain is out there on every television show accusing u.n. ambassador susan rice of covering up a national security breach. he says rice denied al qaeda's lead role in the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi that cost the lives of ambassador chris stevens and three others and she did so knowing it was true. well, the man who defeated mccain in the 2008 presidential campaign takes this as a personal shot at him. how will he respond? will he name ambassador rice his new secretary of state to replace hillary clinton? will he meet mccain's challenge head on and send rice up to the capitol to go face-to-face with the enemy? tonight we study the battlefield and the firepower of the two sides in this year-ending fire fight. mccain sure wants this fight, but do his fellow republicans? do they want an older white guy taking on the competence of a young woman of color, a rhodes scholar of solid reputation? most important, what end does the president want for this match of fact and wits? i'm joined by michael o'hanlon

. >>> then senators john mccain and lindsey graham say they have even more questions after u.n. ambassador susan rice tries to clear the air on benghazi. >>> and black friday shoppers bust another republican myth about this obama economy. david johnson will set the record straight. share your thoughts on facebook and twitter. we're right back. when you take a closer look... ...at the best schools in the world... ...you see they all have something very interesting in common. they have teachers... ...with a deeper knowledge of their subjects. as a result, their students achieve at a higher level. let's develop more stars in education. let's invest in our teachers... ...so they can inspire our students. let's solve this. >>> welcome back to "the ed show." president obama can and should rely on labor to bolster his position in the fiscal cliff negotiations. labor is a major ally in protecting the middle class. today senior white house officials met privately with representatives of labor and other progressive groups. and attendees of the meeting say they were encouraged. one said, they expect taxes to go

. >> stephanie: laura in rockford, illinois. hello, laura welcome. >> caller: hi, john mccain should be embarrassed, so should lindsey graham. they should be ashamed of themselves. they look like they're beating up on some woman who doesn't deserve it. >> stephanie: they look like bullies. that's why i'm glad we gave money to the trevor project. bullying is bullying. lindsey graham standing up and saying, she shouldn't have said anything. do you think they would have been screaming cover up? >> caller: i want to make one comment. i know darn well before the meeting with susan rice, i betcha anything john mccain said no matter what happens no matter what she says, we're troubled. >> stephanie: i think they set her up. they said, we're willing to listen and softening on her. they set her up so she'll come and talk to them. and then they open it up again. >> and they made sure they were closed door meetings so you wouldn't know what susan rice said, and they come at her any way. >> we're nor troubled now than before. well what did she say? >> stephanie: go ahead. >> caller: i thought it

in in january, today, the scott brown for senate campaign 2.0 got everything it could hope for from john mccain, lindsey graham from john mccain, lindsey graham and kelly ayotte after their meeting with ambassador rice. >> we are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got. >> bottom line, i'm more disturbed now than before. >> i'm more troubled today. >> senator mccain's embarrassing past with libya includes a meeting in tripoli in 2009 with gadhafi to discuss the possible delivery of military equipment to that dictator at his side at that meeting, as usual of course, was lindsey graham. also joining him was senator joe lieberman. today sh after meeting with ambassador rice, joe lieberman chose not to join the baseless criticism of ambassador rice. >> based on what she has said as clearly as possible, backed up by the director of the cia, i think it wouldn't be fair to disqualify her based on what she said. >> ambassador rice released this statement after meeting with the republican senators. while we certainly wish we had >> ambassador rice released this statement after meeting

for us to understand where this came from. senator mccain and i are responsible for section 313, and i think when people understand what it is all these arguments i've heard against it none of them hold weight. what we're doing is trying to experiment in the green energy at the expense of our ability to defend america and our readiness. our military is deployed in more locations around the world at a greater operate-rate than was ever the case during the cold war. i sometimes say i look wistfully back on the days of the cold war. back then we had an enemy that we could define. he was an enemy was predictable. that's not the case anymore. after almost two decades of fighting all these contingents worldwide dlawg klug four major regional conflicts with a force structure that's 40% smaller and equipment that is decades older than the military readiness during its decline. this is what we're faced with right now and all is coming at a time when the obama administration has cut the defense budget, projecting over the ten-year period by some $487 billion and if the obama sequestration were t

rice. >> we were thinking of going with fried rice. already, anyway, ok, so mccain, lindsey graham and senator ayat were not happy with how things went. in order to explain how all this went down, we need a political correspondent, not a mini guy political correspondent, one that is absolutely epic. >> sadly, i haven't been a mini guy for a while. >> cenk: you and the me both, brother. tell me what happened today. >> you alluded to it. joe lieberman has to be very jealous, he was one of the three amigos. all three senators spoke today with susan rice. we start here with john mccain, you remember him he ran for president, cenk. >> it is clear that the information that you gave the american people was incorrect when she said that it was a spontaneous demon station triggered by a hate group. >> that's what rice said today. absolutely it was wrong. >> here's what i can tell you. the american people got bad information on 16 september. they got bad information from president obama days after, and the question is should they have been given the information at all. >> oh, senator graham,

lindsey graham, kelly ayotte and -- >> they were upset. john mccain over the weekend. >> john mccain backed up. >> so it's really cool when she said i'm sorry. >> she did the brave thing and went right in there and said i want to -- >> how did that work. >> and talked about her initial account of the attack and explained to them she was relying on faulty intelligence and talking points from the intelligence community. >> they said? >> they said, you know what, we still don't get it. >> throw the video. >> we are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get. it is clear that the information that she gave the american people was incorrect. >> bottom line, i'm more disturbed now than i was before. >> if you don't know what happened just say you don't know what happened. people can push you to give explanations and i want to say -- >> i'm more troubled today knowing having met with the acting director of the cia and ambassador rice. clearly the impression that was given, the information given to the american people was wrong, in fact, ambassador r

your calls at 1-866-55-press. how about this. everybody's trying to figure out why john mccain and lindsey graham are so busy attacking susan rice. well maybe it's because -- think about this, if the president can't appoint susan rice, then he would have to appoint john kerry and that would open up a massachusetts senate seat for scott brown. so it could all be a way of getting back another republican in the united states senate. don't know for sure. just sayin'. all right. we'll look into that and a whole lot more here but first standing by with today's current news update, lisa ferguson in los angeles. hi lisa. take it away. >> hey bill, thanks. good morning everyone. as president heads to meet with leaders of the business world this afternoon politico is reporting that john boehner and his leadership team are making plans to meet with some of these very same executives. now the irony here is that obama and boehner still have no plans to meet themselves face-to-face. the two did meet before congress' thanksgivi

in washington, d.c.. senators grahm, mccain sitting there being -- not summoned, too strong a word, but urgently requested to meet with ambassador rice and to what end when we have the responses we've just shown you from three senators saying they have more questions now than going in? >> well, this meeting was obviously a disaster. if it was intended to bring them closer together, to facilitate her nomination for secretary of state, it was a real failure. when you have senators coming out unmistakenbly things are worse now than before the meeting, that's not a good sign. what obama does for the nomination, i don't kkow, but, clearly, what we have is an administration who can't get the story straight. i think as long as that's out there, this is going to be a very troubled period for susan rice and her perspective nomination. lou: the idea is that any president as a matter of tradition has the right to his choice to fill whatever office is at issue. in this case, the secretary of state. this kind of dissension and contradiction and contest between the two parties over ambassador rice really crea

on a sunday show to talk about an event, that's what john mccain does. are they saying she should have given the unclassified version of the report she was given by the cia? then that would have been criticized. >> you're unfit because you're imparting secrets. >> exactly. >> rice was able to win over someone, joe lieberman. take a listen. >> i would not feel that her appearances and anything she said on those sunday morning talk shows september 16th would disqualify her for appointment to any other office. >> leishman in the context, he's retiring, he's not going to be around to vote on this. but is he signaling for other democrats basically that she has a clear path if her name does come up for nomination? >> i think that's right. joe lieberman is conservative, a hawk, respected by some senators on foreign policy issues. there may be three republican senators who don't like her, another 97 who have votes, the house members who have been campaigning against her don't have votes. something chip said, it would be weird or odd for this process to be playing out if she is not going to be nomina

with senators john mccain and lindsey graham along with the u.n. ambassador susan rice. the three senators emerged from the meeting saying they were honored by the fact that the cia director would meet with them, just three random senators and not in some official capacity testifying before committee on the hill. they appreciated the fact that the administration and the intelligence community was going to such lengths to e swaj their concerns to personally answer their questions about the libya attack in a closed-door meeting with the cia director himself, even though these are just three random senators. the senators said their questions were answered as reasonably could be expected and they were willing to consider the president's nominee for secretary of state. they were tlog hear out those nominations fairly and without prejudice. yeah right. that's not the way it went. here's actually what happened after that meeting today. >> we're not going to consider this nomination until we get answers to our concerns. we're not even close to getting t the basic answers. >> we're e troubled by ma

were with us yesterday you'll remember that her bid to set the record straight with senators john mccain and lindsay graham and kelly ayotte could hardly have gone worse. they were more inflamed about rice's early public comments about the benghazi, libya attack than they had been before that meeting. cnn's dana bash has been watching all of this prenomination confrontation drama and joins us now to talk about this. i know you're trying to wrangle an interview and make sure you catch the senators as they emerge from the meetings. dana, it might sound to some as though some of the critics of ambassador rice feel differently about what they're criticizing. they don't all seem to be in lock step or at least have the same complaints. >> reporter: that's true. no question that there are different levels of issues that senators are upset about. i have to tell you the reason i'm on the phone now is because i'm waiting for a very important meeting that susan rice is having as we speak to wrap up and that is with senator susan collins. why is it important? because if she is nominated to be secret
